FAQ's

  1. How long does it take to build a guitar?

It really depends on the individual, and their experience, motivation, and drive. Having taught many students over the years, with experience ranging from none to some, I suggest allowing a minimum of one month. I strongly encourage potential students to consider a six-week program for electric OR acoustic guitars.  Allow at least two months for an archtop or similarly complex instrument. Remember that a successful project includes time to drawing out plans, build all necessary jigs and then build your instrument.

  2. Is there financial aid available?

Financial aid is not available at this time.

  3. Is housing available?
There is housing available to enrolled students. The housing is free and not considered part of tuition. Housing is a privilege, and all policies concerning housing must be respected and followed. Please see housing policies for additional information.

Housing is a dorm like atmosphere with five bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, and common areas (i.e. T.V. room, music space etc.). Everyone has his or her own bedroom. Housing is onsite above the shop. There is WiFi internet connection and laundry facilities.

  4. What other costs can be expected while attending Mountain View Luthier School?
Personal living expenses such as groceries, laundry supplies, personal care items (toilet paper, toothbrush, soap etc).

Project & Building expenses, including all hardware and cases for instruments (i.e. tuners, bridges, pickups, electronics, etc).

Tuition includes “student grade” wood. Specialty wood or higher quality wood is solely the student’s responsibility, as well as any wood for extra projects.

  5. Will I need a car?
While the convenience of a car is desirable, it is not necessary. Banking, groceries, laundry facilities, and restaurants are all located in downtown Everson, no more than a three-block walk from Mountain View. Public transit is also available throughout Whatcom county – view the WTA’s website for a complete transit map.

  6. Is the shop open nights and weekends?
No. Shop hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday. Instructor supervision is required at all times that the shop is open and whenever hand and power tools are available.

  7. Is there a job placement program?
From time to time manufacturers and music stores may call looking for qualified applicants. However, we are unable to guarantee job assistance or placement programs. We are a reference for qualified students looking to work in the field, and will bear witness to skills or lack thereof accordingly to inquiring parties.

  8. What can one expect to make in this field?
It’s hard to say. It depends on your location, skills, and goals. It will not happen overnight. Sacrifice and dedication are key aspects in the journey to luthiery. You have to have the drive and motivation to continually improve and deliver on your promises and deadlines. My experience has shown that those of who stick with it and have a business mindset have done well for themselves. You will probably not be a millionaire, but it is possible to make a comfortable living.

  9. Will I be a luthier when I’m finished with my course?
This gets asked a lot, and it’s hard to answer. Use the rule of ten thousand hours. It takes at least ten thousand hours to truly master any skill. At this writing, I am approaching 25,000 hours (a conservative estimate) of experience in the art of lutherie. There are still days I feel like a novice, and I know I have much more to learn and experience.

In a year of study, you’ll gain approximately 1,920 hours of experience. There is not a designated amount of schooling required to call yourself a luthier. However, be truthful with yourself and your customers as to ability, skill level and quality of your products and services. Then take a look at some of the pros that pay all their bills with their skills, and that should give you an indication of how high the bar is and if you’re able to reach it.

You will learn the basic skills for a solid foundation in the art of lutherie at Mountain View Luthier School.

  10. Do I need to bring anything else with me?
Towels, sheets, and blankets are provided, though many prefer to bring their own. I recommend packing light, but feel free to bring those creature comforts that make you feel more at home.

  11. Is my girlfriend, spouse, or partner able to live with me?
There is no housing for couples available at Mountain View Luthier School. If you wish to bring your significant other, you will have to find your own accommodations at your expense. There will be no break in tuition cost for this added expense.

  12. Am I able to bring my pet?
Sorry no pets allowed. No exceptions.
