Custom OM

This guitar was commissioned by a customer. The OM style body has a Sitka Spruce top and Koa sides, with a Cocobolo headstock. She was a labor of love, and in the end, played and sounded beautifully. My customer was very happy. Here is the story of how she came to be.

1. It all starts here with a bookmatched set of Koa sides.

2. The sides have been bent and are ready to be "blocked and locked" into the mold.

3. Rim assembly secured in mold.

4. Kerfing and side braces being glued into their new home.

5. Back braces fitted and glued in the "go-bar deck".

6. Back braces installed.

7. Back being glued to rim assembly.

8. Back and rim becoming a box.

9. The top being joined the same way as the back was.

10. The top with inlaid rosette.

11. The top receiving it's braces.

12. Top after braces have been carved.

13. Top being laminated to rim.

14. Binding being installed in routed channels on box.

15. Neck profile cut from mahogany blank.

16. The ebony fingerboard slotted, tapered, and bound.

17. Headstock veneer of cocobolo inlaid, shaped, and ready to be glued.

18. Body with female dovetail cut. The guitar in this picture is not the OM, but demonstrates the process.

19. Neck with male dovetail cut.

20. Neck and body joined by the dovetail in a rough fit.

21. Headstock veneer being glued into place.

22. Neck has been carved and fitted to the body. It is now in the process of receiving frets.

23. Frets installed and the body is now ready for finishing.

24. The finished instrument, displayed at varying angles and perspectives. The neck was finished in gunstock oil, the body in a water based lacquer, and the sitka spruce top was french polished. She sounded and played beautifully. My customer was very happy.
